Within Fırat University Faculty of Science, our undergraduate programs in Biology and Molecular Biology and Genetics have a long-established history and a strong academic staff. Our Biology Department has been successfully conducting education and research activities in fundamental and applied biological sciences since 1975. Meanwhile, our Molecular Biology and Genetics Department offers a contemporary and interdisciplinary education in line with the current requirements of life sciences.

Our mission is to train individuals who examine the structural, functional, and genetic foundations of living organisms from the molecular to the ecosystem level with a holistic approach; who combine theoretical knowledge with modern laboratory practices, possess critical and analytical thinking skills, uphold ethical values, contribute to scientific advancements, and provide benefit to society.
Biology Department
The Department of Biology at Fırat University Faculty of Science offers a comprehensive four-year undergraduate education, covering all biological processes from the molecular structure of organisms to the ecosystem level. Students are provided with theoretical knowledge in fundamental fields such as botany, zoology, microbiology, ecology, genetics, and biotechnology, alongside practical training in modern laboratories. The program aims to develop students' scientific research skills, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities. Graduates are equipped with the competence to be employed in a wide range of fields such as education, health, environment, biotechnology, and research.
Educational Objectives
To train graduates who are able to examine living organisms in terms of structure, function, organization, and diversity using scientific methods, and who understand the interactions between organisms and their environment.
To educate individuals capable of conducting research, development, planning, execution, and supervision in the field of biology, who can develop projects and analyze and communicate the data obtained.
To produce graduates who are preferred by the public and private sectors due to their knowledge, skills, fundamental values, and professional competencies.
To foster professionals who can establish connections between different disciplines, possess strong communication skills, are open to personal development, are inquisitive and entrepreneurial, embody contemporary qualities, and are suitable for teamwork.
To instill ethical values, sensitivity to environmental and societal issues, awareness of biodiversity conservation, and a consciousness of occupational health and safety.
To cultivate biologists who recognize the importance of lifelong learning, follow current issues in the universe and nature, can find solutions to problems, foresee the effects of global warming, keep up with current scientific approaches, are conscious of environmental protection and quality requirements, and make a difference in every institution they work for.
Graduates of the Biology Department will possess the following competencies:
1. The ability to explain the structure, functions, classifications, and life processes of living organisms from the molecular to the ecosystem level.
2. The ability to formulate hypotheses, design and conduct experiments, and analyze and interpret data related to living systems.
3. Competence in scientific thinking and problem-solving for addressing biological problems.
4. Proficiency in using laboratory techniques at molecular, cellular, histological, and physiological levels.
5. Knowledge of ecology, environmental science, and biodiversity conservation, and the ability to raise public awareness in these areas.
6. Ability to use current biological analysis methods, bioinformatics tools, and basic statistical analysis techniques.
7. Ability to effectively present scientific knowledge and findings orally, in writing, and in digital formats.
8. Ability to take individual responsibility and work effectively in multidisciplinary academic or sectoral teams.
9. Ability to apply acquired knowledge and skills to projects and practices in fields such as environment, health, agriculture, education, and industry.
10. Proficiency in using basic computer software and digital tools relevant to the field.

Molecular Biology and Genetics Department
The Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics is an interdisciplinary program focused on the transmission, regulation, and utilization of genetic information, aiming to understand life at the cellular and molecular levels. Students receive comprehensive theoretical and practical education in areas such as molecular genetics, cell biology, bioinformatics, biotechnology, and genetic engineering. Supported by laboratory-based courses, the program aims to enhance students' experimental skills and research competencies. Graduates are equipped with the qualifications required to take active roles in diverse fields such as research institutions, hospitals, biotechnology companies, and academic careers.
Graduates of the Molecular Biology and Genetics Department will possess the following competencies:
1. To possess and utilize advanced knowledge and understanding, supported by up-to-date textbooks, practical tools, and other scientific resources in the field of Molecular Biology and Genetics, building on the qualifications gained in secondary education.
2. To be able to integrate the knowledge and skills acquired from molecular biology and genetics courses and apply them to theoretical and practical areas, as well as gain knowledge tailored to their own interests.
3. To acquire practical skills in fundamental molecular biology and genetics techniques.
4. To be able to take responsibility individually and as a team member to solve unexpected complex situations encountered in the field of Molecular Biology and Genetics.
5. To have the competence to plan academic studies in the field of Molecular Biology and Genetics and to conduct these studies independently or collaboratively with stakeholders.
